Texts and Translations
Texts and Translations encompasses the MHRA's ambitious project to make important cultural texts available: reliable, newly edited, affordable. It also includes our substantial contributions to bibliography and lexicography.
Critical Texts, Phoenix, Jewelled Tortoise and the MHRA Library of Medieval Welsh Literature all present new editions of texts in their original languages.
European Translations and Tudor and Stuart Translations present translations which were important in reception history, while New Translations offers newly commissioned translations of major works previously unavailable in English.
MHRA Bibliographies includes database as well as print projects. (For the The Annual Bibliography of English Language & Literature, see the Journals page.) Publications of the Modern Humanities Research Association, now an occasional series, notably includes the Anglo-Norman Dictionary project.
Finally, there are nearly 100 monographs available in the Texts and Dissertations series, a showcase for new authors. This work now continues under our imprint Legenda, so that T&D is closed to new proposals, but the series was a highly active one until 2015 and contains many titles of current interest.
ISSN: | The MHRA Critical Texts series aims to provide affordable critical editions of lesser-known literary texts that are out of copyright and are not currently in print (or are difficult to obtain). The texts are taken from the following languages: English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish. Titles are selected by members of the distinguished Editorial Board and edited by leading academics. The aim is to produce scholarly editions rather than teaching texts, but the potential for crossover to undergraduate reading lists is recognized. |
| The ‘Jewelled Tortoise’, named after J. K. Huysmans’s iconic image of Decadent taste in A Rebours (1884), is a series dedicated to Aesthetic and Decadent literature. Its scholarly editions, complete with critical introductions and accompanying materials, aim to make available to students and scholars alike works of literature and criticism which embody the intellectual daring, formal innovation, and cultural diversity of the British and European fin de siècle. The series is particularly committed to republishing works that are out of print, especially short novels, poetry, plays, and collections of essays or short stories. |

| MHRA Library of Medieval Welsh Literature There is a desperate shortage of edited texts of medieval Welsh poetry and prose for the teaching of Middle Welsh through the medium of English. MHRA Library of Medieval Welsh Literature is an attempt to fulfil the need for more material felt by lecturers and students in Celtic departments all over the world. Each volume contains a short introduction putting the texts in their literary and historical context, a bibliography, the edited texts, textual and grammatical notes and a glossary. The level of difficulty of the texts and the level of assistance given varies from volume to volume. The series will provide texts from very different literary genres and thus cater for a wide range of students, from the beginner to the advanced. |

| Bithell Series of Dissertations (now owned elsewhere) The Bithell Series of Dissertations is an ongoing series of doctoral theses in German and Austrian Studies published by the Institute of Modern Languages Research. Volumes 14 to 41 in the series were joint publications with the MHRA, and details of those are given on this site. |
